Carl Wain has lived in Malton & Norton for 16 years with his wife and two children. He has a wide range of experience in social housing and supporting vulnerable people in the community. He ran a youth group for three years in Malton; worked as a volunteer for the Prince’s Trust making grant application assessments for young people in Ryedale and played a key part in setting up a housing support service for homeless families.
Carl Says “I believe my enthusiasm combined with the expertise of the local Liberal Democrat members will create a solid platform to contribute in maintaining a town with a strong identity while encouraging new ideas and opportunities.”

I was very pleased to see such a strong turn out by the community to support the building of a sports centre in Malton. I moved to the area 16 years ago and was excited to hear that there were plans to build a leisure centre as I had two small children. Sixteen years later they are now off to university – the opportunity lost. Although very frustrated I cannot imagine the degree of frustration for local people having supported this initiative for thirty years!
Having a range of leisure facilities gives the opportunity for all the community to exercise more regularly which is more important than ever with the growing issues around both child and adult obesity. Carl

What’s important to you?
Carl took the opportunity to meet residents in Malton to find out what was important to them. Some of the responses were a desire to:
Ø Have cleaner streets
Ø Reduce heavy traffic through Malton by building a link road
Ø Further improve the recycling with door to door collection of plastic bottles and cardboard
Ø Maintain the Malton maternity unit and other local hospital facilities
Ø Create traffic calming on Newbiggin
Ø Improve leisure facilities
Ø Maintain Ryedale by apposing the proposal for North Yorkshire to become a unitary authority
Carl was pleased to hear that residents of Malton were keen for further improvements and would not hesitate in supporting any of these initiatives.

Fairtrade in the Town
(Carl interviews Alison Hardwick, co-ordinator of the Fairtrade Town Group)

Sam Mogona – a Fairtrade Coffee Farmer from Uganda visits Malton.
The Fairtade Town Group was set up to try and achieve Fairtrade status for the towns of Malton, Norton and Old Malton. This was set up in March 2006 with the launch of the Big Brew on 8 July and was followed by a Fairtrade fortnight. The highlight of the fortnight was a visit from Sam Magona, a Fairtrade farmer from Uganda who talked about the positive impact Fairtrade has had to the community.
How did you feel the Fairtrade fortnight went?
“We were very pleased we reached different groups of people through publicity in the libraries and classroom sessions in schools. The visit from Sam was very important; he was a delight to have”
I believe you are planning to obtain Fairtrade status for Malton, Norton and Old Malton. How is it progressing?
“It is progressing well, there are five goals to achieve. Norton Town Council have had a presentation and have agreed to support the group. We are hoping to do a similar presentation Malton Town Council. Nine of the eleven churches have now got the Fairtrade certificate as well as a number of shops selling Fairtrade products. The main focus will now be on businesses and other community groups”
Is there anything the residents can do to help?
“Any help would be welcome, residents could buy Fairtrade products locally and look out for and support future events. If anyone has their own business or contacts with local businesses then please contact me for a Fairtrade at Work leaflets. Anyone would also be welcome to come to the Fairtrade Town Group meetings.”
