Plastic’s NOT Fantastic!
‘Bags for life Malton and Norton’ needs your help!
The group is running a competition for 4-11 year olds to design an environmentally - friendly bag for the towns. The bag is to be printed locally on fairtrade cotton, benefiting both the local community and the wider world.
Children in and around Malton are being asked to send in designs, which should encourage shopping in Malton and Norton and ask people to care for the environment by abandoning plastic bags.
Spokesperson Hannah Keal said: “We’re really keen to get the whole community involved and do something local people can be proud of. As well as the cotton bags, we’ll have the option of biodegradable plastic ones, and hopefully paper too - very useful if you leave your shopper at home, but don’t want to go for plastic”
Local schoolchildren are being invited to design the front of the bag and entries, on A4 paper, have to be submitted to Bags for Life, 19 St Nicholas Street, Norton, Malton, YO17 9AQ by April 29th.
The design has to be limited to two colours, be simple and eye-catching.
Hannah said: “You don’t have to be a master painter, just get your idea down on paper."
"Our initial costs will need to be covered so we are asking local businesses to buy bags to sell on to customers, donate prizes for the competition and volunteers to help."
All entries must be in by the 29th April, but early entry means that your design will be displayed in the centre of Malton.
All entrants should remember to add their name, address, age and telephone number to the back along with which school they attend.
On Thursday May 1st, well - known local artist Robert Fuller will present the lucky winner with a mystery prize. The school that the winning child attends will also receive a book for their library, courtesy of Hoppers of Malton.

We have all recently received our Council Tax bills for the coming financial year, which begins in April.
The bill is made up of tax not only from Ryedale District Council, which sends out the bills, but from North Yorkshire County Council, the Police, Fire, and Ambulance services and a small local sum from your town or parish council.
The largest amount comes from the Conservative controlled County Council - a 4.75% increase - whilst Ryedale's 4% rise was not supported by your Lib Dem councillors.
However, if you feel that you are paying too much Council Tax, you can check out the charge. Among the papers with your tax bill is one which gives you the opportunity to challenge your tax band.
Many people do not realise this is an option and they may be paying more than necessary. So if you are concerned, either use the form provided, or ring Ryedale District Council on Malton 600666 for an appointment to discuss your band.
LANDMARK CLUB TO CELEBRATE 100 YEARS
Standing in a prominent position in the centre of one of Ryedale’s most beautiful towns is a well-known political and social club that is about to celebrate 100 years as a leading local institution.
Pickering Liberal Club, visited over the decades by national figures in the party including Lloyd George and David Steel, has dominated Smiddy Hill for most of the century since the laying of its foundation stone.
The Club, now the headquarters of the Liberal Democrats in the new constituency of Thirsk and Malton, is appealing for information from local historians who might have information about its early days. Committee member and town councillor Stephen Jenson (telephone 01751 476083) would be pleased to receive any stories from those times.
At its Annual General Meeting members re-elected as President of the Club Ryedale Councillor Elizabeth Shields, during whose successful byelection campaign in 1986 the Club was again the centre of national attention with crowds on Smiddy Hill.
Other officers elected at the AGM were:
Chairman – Councillor Howard Keal
Vice-Chairman – Councillor Peter Lerew
Secretary – The Rev. Barrie Morley
Treasurer – Alec Featherstone
Committee Members elected were – Councillor Michael Beckett, Bernard Hill, Councillor Stephen Jenson, Graham Lockwood, Councillor Arthur Aslett, David Tolson.
